Right now there is dissent within the Church. Not that long ago, the Church of Ireland made news; right now the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, an organization of American nuns, is in the headlines. All I can say is that a true Catholic must always follow the teachings of the Church. Unfortunately, the religious are no different from the laity ~ they also have egos. If you have an ego, then Jesus can not truly be your Lord ~ it's that simple. Again, seek union with God and your ego will be replaced with humility.
The teaching of the Church in 1520 AD allowed burning heretics which is a form of torture ( see Exsurge Domine, art. 33 condemned). Now the Church says torture is an intrinsic evil. Who was right? Pope Leo X or John Paul II? Obedience is not always good as nazi Germany showed. But. Some nuns are not only disobeying the Bishops which would have been laudable in the 4th century and in the 16th on torture...but they have strayed from scripture which condemns divorce and gay acts...etc.
ReplyDeleteIt is always bad to disobey scripture. It is not always bad to disobey Bishops.
Read Cardinal Newman on the Arian crisis and the 4 th century.
Thanks for the comment. I don't know that much about Church history. I googled "Exsurge Domine, art. 33" and the website http://www.firstthings.com/onthesquare/2012/06/if-you-will came up at the top, which, with all the comments, talks about obedience and the nuns' case very well.
