In today's Gospel reading from Luke 8, the mother and brothers of Jesus came to see him but were unable to reach him because of the crowd. He was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wishing to see you." In reply, he said to them, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it." Therefore, to be close to Jesus, we must act on his word. We cannot simply do whatever we want and say, "I trust in God." That is not enough—we must actively do God's will!
