In most cases, when someone verbally hurts you, the best way to respond is to remain calm and let the person say all he has to say. If you remain cool and don't retaliate, that should end the matter in most cases. Really, how important is it for you to be understood by others? If God understands you perfectly, shouldn't that be good enough? If you do respond, then do it calmly with no intention to get even. I know it's easy for me to dole out advices.
